We think that this camp is quite big, perhaps a little too imposing and the Orient Express, the group owners (now called Belmond Safaris) are perhaps better known for the hospitality rather than their safari experience.
However, its the Khwai region itself which is the reason why people should book here, known as one of the best wildlife regions in Botswana you have excellent chances of seeing Lion, Leopard and Wild Dog hunting.
If you like air-conditioning in your tent then this is a great camp, they have also reduced their pricing in deference to the area being public. At this stage though there is only one other lodge that comes near its high standard in the area and that is Machaba Camp.

Wildlife
The wildlife viewing is generated around similar species to that of the general Okavango Delta. In and around Khwai you can see general plains game such as elephant, impala, zebra and wildebeest sable antelope with great concentrations of lion, leopard and hyena. In recent seasons there have also been good numbers of wild dogs and some occasional cheetah.
The more aquatic animals like hippo, waterbuck and red lechwe are generally always seen depending on the area visited.
Birdlife is also strong and concentrates on the main river area where lovely flocks of pygmy goose and white-faced ducks mingle with spur-winged goose, comb ducks and African Jacanas.

Overview
Khwai River Lodge nestles on the edge of a Leadwood forest overlooking the vast floodplains of the Moremi Game Reserve. Known for its exceptional range of big game, many animals can be seen slaking their thirst from the comfort of your own private deck.
Moremi Game Reserve is situated at the heart of the Okavango Delta and was the first wildlife area to be set aside by tribal people rather than colonial powers.
Although the only statutorily protected part of the Okavango Delta, it is surrounded by a carefully controlled buffer zone. This allows free movement of animals according to seasonal migration. Extending north and east to join Chobe National Park, it is a wildlife haven that stretches all the way to Kasane.
The plot size is quite large and is mainly laid to well kept grass.
The central area is dominated by a very large thatched structure which acts as a the main lodge, lounge and dinning area. Within the lounge is a feature open fireplace which is quite unusual for a lodge in Botswana and a great help in winter. To the outer areas of this large communal meeting place is a very large deck which overlooks the Khwai River itself.
The very large tented accommodations are spread on either side of the main lodge and are reachable on ground level.
To the side of the main lodge area is a raised hide with some seating for you to enjoy the views over the river.
Room Description
All luxury tents at Khwai River Lodge are housed on raised wooden platforms, offering magnificent views of the African landscape. The tents are shaded by a traditional African thatch roof.
Sounds of wildlife surround you as you relax on your large private deck furnished with easy chairs and a hammock. The deck also provides a spectacular environment for enjoying a private dinner in complete harmony with your surroundings, ideal for special a occasion or just as a treat.
The tent interiors are luxuriously appointed with en suite bathrooms, a private fully stocked mini bar, four poster bed with mosquito netting as well as discreet air conditioning.
