Dry Camp

Safari Lifestyles View

Lagoon camp and its sister, Lebala Camp both share the vast Kwando Concession in the Greater Linyanti, northern Botswana, they are both far apart so one camp does not intrude upon the other. Lagoon is situated in a lovely position along the Kwando River that borders with Namibia, as such it is a tranquil setting which serves as an effective break for the fantastic game drives this camp offers. The lagoon outside also allows the camp to provide some boating excursions, something quite advantageous in this dry region.

The accommodation is good and mostly in a classic African bush camp style with tents on the river, but it is the game experience here that sets it apart. Kwando camps are well known for the tracker policy and have a wonderful attitude towards game drives which take priority over all other things in camp.

If good game is around then Lagoon and its sister, Lebala represent two of the best camps in Botswana to visit.

The Kwando River concession is 232 000 ha (573 000 acres) of unfenced wilderness area and features two camps on the Kwando River – Lagoon and Lebala. Famous for huge herds of elephant and buffalo with our wild dog viewing considered the best in Africa. Predators include lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah and four species of smaller cats.

The area was subject to the documentary “Tight Spots”, or “Mad Mike and Marks’, which successfully showed the unbelievable array of wildlife that this area of Botswana has to offer.

If anywhere in Botswana is a “Big Game” area, then the Kwando concession has to be close to the top.

The Camp

Camp Overview

Lagoon is perched on the banks of the wild Kwando River, overlooking the Mudumu National Park in the Namibian Caprivi Strip.

The camp is nestled beneath towering ebony and marula trees and accommodates up to 16 guests in eight traditionally styled ‘tents.’ The heavily forested site is home to a wide variety of birds and mammals, while elephant and hippo are normally visible from the camp. The stunning views and close proximity of wildlife all contribute to the pervading sense of calm at Lagoon.

Lodge Layout

Lagoon underwent a complete rebuild and was re-opened in March 2011. Nestled under ebony and marula trees the spacious, thatched covered rooms are the perfect place to relax during the day and soak up the atmosphere while looking across the lagoon towards Namibia.

The thatched main area of the camp is multi-level, the top area being the library which almost always has a breeze sweeping through.

The main area was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape and allow views of the river and wetlands from all areas. Just past the bar/lounge area is the plunge pool, and it’s a short meander to the deck where a comfortable swing chair awaits.

Just outside the main area towards the water is an open area for seating next to the fire pit.

Room Description

Each room is elevated on a deck with comfortable loungers in order to maximize the views, the sliding door leads into a sunken lounge area with a gauze window offering spectacular views over the lagoon, this area also offers you armchair seating and a writing desk.

Go up a step to the open plan bedroom area with its large sumptuous bed with wooden headboard, behind is a large dressing area. This leads to the bathroom, with double sinks, stand alone claw-foot bath with beautiful views, indoor shower, separate flush toilet and also an outdoor shower. The bathrooms boast the same spectacular view as the lounge/bedroom area.

The tent interiors are kept pleasant throughout the summer months by a mixture of overhanging thatch roofs, electric fans and the large gauze lined windows, which allow cooling breezes through the tent.

There also exists a family unit, which has two bedrooms and a shared en-suite bathroom. This unit has a little more privacy in being tucked away from the main areas.

Camp Environment

Lagoon camp, as the name suggests, sits right on the bank of the Kwando River. The river acts as the border to Namibia with the Muduma national Park opposite. The main area and accommodations are fringed by large trees whilst overlooking the waterway and the flood plains beyond.

The Kwando concession is the largest in northern Botswana covering 232,000 ha of beautiful, unfenced wilderness. There are only two camps situated within this private concession, the other is this lodges sister camp, Lagoon, which is to the north. Added together, there are a total of 16 guest tents in the area – so an exclusive wilderness experience is guaranteed.

The concession has 50km of exclusive river frontage. The western side of this vast area consists of dense woodland but Lebala, the Tswana word for wide-open plains has expansive tracts of African Plains and wetlands. This system is an intricate labyrinth of waterways, reed beds, islands, floodplains, bush, scrub and trees.
