The Camp

Camp Overview

Eagle Island Lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta is the ultimate luxury wetland safari paradise.

Situated on the remote Xaxaba island among a web of waterways and lush vegetation, it overlooks a lagoon that attracts a breathtaking variety of big game and exotic birds. Explore the region by local canoe, roam on foot or take to the air in an exhilarating helicopter flight overlooking the magnificent Botswana landscape.

A wonderful secluded retreat, Eagle Island Lodge offers a safari vacation that brings together the excitement of discovery and an experience of the real Africa.

Lodge Layout

The Large man area has a thatched roof and has a very open-planned feel about it, it houses most of the communal areas including a lounge with an array of soft furnishings, a large dining area and a bar.

The grounds are partly paved and kept with manicured grass areas, to the front is a large veranda area that itself houses s pool which is bigger than most lodges which overlooks the channel itself.

A separate area houses the ‘boma” where traditional dances takes place and where dinner is sometimes served.

Room Description

Savute Elephant Lodge offers an oasis type setting in complete luxury. All luxury tents are housed on raised wooden platforms, offering great views, and shaded by a traditional African thatch roof.

The large private decks are furnished with easy chairs and a hammock, ideal for viewing wildlife, or for enjoying a private dinner in complete privacy, except for some glowing wild eyes…

The tent interiors are luxuriously appointed with such comforts as an en suite bathroom, private fully stocked mini bar, four poster bed with mosquito netting, as well as discreet air conditioning.

Camp Environment

The surrounding environment is a haven for any game in need of water, especially in the drier months. Sitting right on the edge of the Savuti Channel in amongst the scrub and trees that line the channel you never really know what is going to wander through.

Stretching from the waterways of the Linyanti all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. But this fickle and unpredictable channel has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere – a mystery that has intrigued geologists and other researchers for many years.

When David Livingstone discovered the Savute Channel in 1851 it was flowing. Thirty years later the channel had disappeared and the Savute Marsh had dried out, remaining this way for almost 80 years. It flowed again in the late 1950s, continuing until the early 1980s when it again receded, gaining the channel its reputation as ‘the river which flows in both directions’.
In 2009, after another extended hiatus, the channel began flowing again and by January 2010 had spilled into the Savute Marsh for the first time in three decades. No-one knows how long the water will remain…
