Safari Lifestyles View

One of the oldest camps in the Okavango Delta, Gunns’ Camp gives you a classic styled bush camp with great views over the Okavango floodplains. This is a wet camp therefore the activities are more relaxed. Enjoy yourself whilst drifting through the floodplains on a mokoro, or take a slightly more strenuous activity and go on a bush walk on Chiefs Island.

As it is a wet area it is not really known for big game, but you never know what you are going to see, certainly you have good chances of seeing herds of beautiful red lechwe running through the water.

The sister camp, Moremi crossing is not too far away and is much newer. Gunns’ is a much smaller and more intimate affair so we would recommend this lodge for its quietness alone with ability to get a real Delta experience.

Wildlife

Gunns Camp being a water based camp offers a wide variety of animal and bird species, our walks on Chief’s Island give you the opportunity to get a better view of not just the big animals but the smaller insects and birds that contribute to the Okavango’s vast ecosystem.

Game which has been spotted on walks has been Lion, Leopard, Wild dog, Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Buffalo, Red Lechwe and many more. On the mokoro’s you get to see the water birds like African Jacana’s, African Fish eagles and if you look carefully you will see the Malakite Kingfishers darting between the reeds, there is also a chance that your guide will find the rare Pel’s Fishing owl.

The Camp

Camp Overview

Overlooking the legendary Chiefs Island and bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Gunn’s Camp is one of the last few remaining luxury, vintage safari camps. Set under leafy palms and African Ebony to blend naturally with its unique surroundings, Gunn’s Camp achieves a fine balance of comfort without isolating guests from the sights and sounds of the wilderness.

Gunn’s Camp is the sister camp of Moremi Crossing Camp and sits closeby. The camp is leading the way in making the Okavango Delta as environmentally friendly as possible. The camp runs off a massive solar-panel, which feeds power to the entire camp. Hot water is supplied through a state-of-the-art solar-heated geyser system, delivering hot water to each room.

Lodge Layout

The flagship accommodation offered at Gunn’s Camp consists of 6 fully furnished, deluxe Kenya-style meru tents with en-suite bathrooms featuring standalone baths and outside private showers. Set on raised platforms overlooking the delta plains Gunn’s Camp is ideal for honeymooners or guests looking for a more intimate and personalized safari experience. All 6 tents are discretely set within the densely treed island ensuring privacy and tranquility. Each has been traditionally furnished with an eclectic mixture of solid wood and African furniture and offers a lounge area as well as private veranda.

The accommodation area is connected to the main camp via raised wooden walkway crossing the wetlands and magically lit by a series of fairylike lanterns. Guests have access to the elevated bar, lounge and dining room, campfire boma and swimming pool.

Camp Environment

Gunns Camp is situated on the southern central side of the Okavango Delta and overlooks the famous Moremi Game Reserve being pretty much right on its border.

This area is deemed a “wet” where very few dry activities take place. As such there exist a complex array of palm fringed islands dotted in amongst the floodplains and waterways of this part of the Delta.

The camp sites on one of these island which is nicely positioned in amongst its thick trees and palms whilst taking advantage of a beautiful floodplain in front.
